This year the Greater Stark County Urban League (GSCUL) is celebrating 101 years of advocacy and support for the African American and underserved communities in Stark County. During the past century, the staff of the GSCUL has worked and lived side-by-side with the residents of these communities. As a result, we have a deep understanding of the barriers these residents face — this perspective uniquely enables us to provide culturally-infused programs and services.

Our mission is to empower residents in these communities to reach full economic, social, and health parity to enrich their lives and the lives of their families. At the GSCUL we believe everything is possible. A better job, a better home bolstered by education, health services, and justice.

Our Workforce Development Program paves a pathway to economic freedom and self-sufficiency by connecting participants with jobs that pay a livable wage, provide a career path and access to healthcare. Our Navigators develop strategies tailored to the individual’s needs and mitigate the barriers they may face such as upskilling, education, transportation, food, and housing. The GSCUL follows our candidates for one year to support the retention of our placements.

The GSCUL’s Health Program builds healthy and safe communities to eliminate health disparities through prevention, healthy eating, education and access to affordable healthcare. As you might expect, we expanded our services to address the community’s critical needs due to COVID-19.

The GSCUL’s Social Justice Program addresses inequity across a variety of issues. This is especially important during the COVID pandemic and the parallel pandemic of social injustice many in the African American and underserved communities are experiencing. Recent efforts include:

The strides we’ve made were not achieved in isolation. It is through partnerships with organizations throughout our community that we have come together to build a foundation for success. Please consider making a donation and help us continue to pave the way for the underserved.
